About the Program

The mission of The Eli J. & Phyllis N. Segal Citizen Leadership Program at Brandeis University is to foster the next generation of citizen leaders. It was established to honor and continue the work of the late Eli Segal, his wife Phyllis, and their commitment to developing new generations of leaders. The Program is a constantly expanding, intergenerational constellation of citizen leaders working across all sectors, who give each other lifelong support as they devise solutions to society’s most intractable problems in pursuit of a more just and equitable world.

The Segal Fellow community includes over 135 inspiring lifelong Fellows who are already leaders in their communities and who represent a diverse array of backgrounds and experiences. With the help of over 600 Segal Network founders and partners, Segal Fellows are making an impact in 24 states and 3 countries.

How It Works

Fellows are selected through a competitive process each year and gain entry into the program as Brandeis University students or through partnerships directly with AmeriCorps, City Year, and AmeriCorps Alums @ Service Year Alliance. Selected Fellows take part in a first year citizen leadership curriculum, join in lifelong professional development and networking opportunities, receive mentorship and coaching, and engage actively in both their peer cohort and the larger Network. How to Apply

Every year, AmeriCorps alumni are eligible to join The Segal Citizen Leadership Program. AmeriCorps alumni can join the program through one of three paths:

1. Becoming a Segal Fellow at AmeriCorps

For Segal Fellows at AmeriCorps, the first year of their fellowship includes a paid year-long position at AmeriCorps’ headquarters, contributing to the future of and learning about the inner workings of national service. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis with priority given to candidates who apply by September 27.
