Margaret Garvey
Acting Director, AmeriCorps VISTA
Margaret (Maggie) Garvey is committed to ending poverty and building the Beloved Community. Garvey holds a bachelor's in political studies from Simmons University in Boston, Mass., and a master's in political studies and civic leadership from Prescott College in Prescott, Ariz., where she also served as a senior fellow with the Institute for Sustainable Social Change. Dedicated to innovating the social service space, Garvey has launched four successful non-profit organizations focused on homelessness, LGBTQI+ youth development, social research, and community service.
Garvey's national service journey began as an AmeriCorps member with the VISTA program in 2006 serving to inspire local solutions to the methamphetamine epidemic in rural northern Arizona. She founded Arizona Serve following her year of service to expand service opportunities across the state. In 2013, she joined AmeriCorps to serve as the state director of Kentucky, Kansas, and Missouri before establishing the Northeast Regional Office as the founding regional administrator. Garvey then served for two years as the acting deputy director for the AmeriCorps VISTA program before becoming the acting director. Garvey is proud to lead the AmeriCorps VISTA team and support a thriving network of empowered local leaders who serve to drive change on a national scale.
