The Detroit Parent Network Pathways to Literacy (PTL) project sought to improve the literacy skills of children aged 1.5 – 5.5 years in low-income communities of Detroit, Michigan.

This report provides an overview of the project activities, participants, data collection, and some assessments collected for the duration of the project (2013-2015).

Findings:

  • The program was monitored for fidelity through its Usability (pilot) Phase, Formative Phase, and Full Implementation Phase.
  • Preliminary outcomes showed greater average improvement on language and literacy scores for PTL students than non-PTL students.
  • Preliminary outcomes also showed greater average improvement for adults reading with children in the PTL program than those not in the program.

This study terminated earlier than anticipated, before a stronger level of evidence (as was intended) could be reached.
