The Notre Dame Mission Volunteers AmeriCorps (NDMVA) program operates a K-12 intervention in more than 100 schools and community organizations across 23 program sites in cities throughout the United States, serving more than 13,000 students. The intervention provides in-school and after-school academic tutoring and small group instruction, out-of school enrichment programs, providing intern teaching services under the direction of a master teacher, and provides general classroom assistance to teachers. The evaluation sought to assess the impact of the program on student engagement and attitudes in three Chicago schools, one of the largest and most representative of program cities.
The study found that the program:
- Significantly improved Behavioral and Emotional Engagement among NDMVA-served students compared to non-served students;
- Significantly reduced Emotional Disaffection among NDMVA-served students compared to non-served students;
- Showed no significant affect on Behavioral Disaffection among NDMVA-served students compared to non-served students; and
- Led served students to feel supported, attached to the NDMVA members, and appreciative of their services.
