Birth and Beyond Family Resource Center Initiative considered the impact of the home visitation (HV) parenting education program delivered by AmeriCorps members on parenting skills. The study also measured the impact on likelihood of referral to Child Protection Services of parents who received at least 8 hours of programming, compared to similar parents who did not participate in the program.
The study found that in comparison, participating parents:
- Showed a statistically significant improvement in parenting skills and attitudes,
- Were 41% less likely to have a substantiated referral to CPS, and
- Were 18% less likely to be referred to CPS at all.
Additionally, for parents with previous CPS history, receiving 25-34 hours of HV program services demonstrated the greatest reduction in post-program referrals of any kind.
